La Basílica de la Sagrada Familia de Barcelona diseñada por Antonio de Gaudí, es una de sus obras mas conocidas y todo un símbolo con el paso de los años en Barcelona. Este templo con una arquitectura única y singular ,extravagante,ambiciosa y polémica se empezó a construir en 1882 y se calcula que se pueda terminar sobre el 2030. Actualmente Josep Maria Subirachs es el escultor que continúa con el proyecto.

La Sagrada Familia ha tenido diferentes etapas ya que en 1882 se colocó la primera piedra de esta impresionante basílica pero aún sigue en construcción. Al principio la basílica fue un proyecto destinado al arquitecto Francesc de Paula Villar, pero apenas un año después  fue Gaudí el elegido para seguir con la obra. La obra se dedicó con pasión al proyecto de la basílica hasta  su muerte en 1926. La cripta y la fachada lateral del Nacimiento fueron declaradas posteriormente Patrimonio de la Humanidad

" Gracias a los dibujos conservados de Gaudí en Barcelona y las maquetas se ha podido continuar las obras, con la aportación a menudo de donaciones anónimas para seguir con la contrucción."

La Sagrada Familia está llena de simbolismos la mires por donde la mires. Posee tres fachadas monumentales: La fachada de poniente está dedicada a la Pasión y a la Muerte, La fachada de levante está dedicada al nacimiento de Cristo y la fachada mayor, la de la Gloria simboliza la fe religiosa

Las cuatro torres de cada fachada vienen a simbolizar en conjunto, los doce apóstoles. La Madre de Dios está simbolizada por una especie de torre cupular que corona el ábside.Cuando entras dentro de la basílica descubres todo un mundo de colores y metáforas en un entorno de simbolismo indescriptible.Una vez  en el interior de la basílica puedes subir a las torres  en ascensor o a pie y disfrutar de una maravillosa vista de Barcelona.

The Sagrada Família of Barcelona  is Antoni Gaudí’s best-known work, an incredible masterpiece and has become a real symbol of Barcelona. Ambitious, extravagant  and controversial allways, this amazing and unique modern temple has been under construction since 1882, and is expected to be completed by 2030. There is a legend who says " it will take longer than finishing the Sagrada Familia" because is difficult to find a concrete date

The first stone of this amazing basilica was laid in 1882, and building work is still progress. Although  orignally the architect Francesc de Paula Villar was commissioned to carry out the Sagrada Família’s project, just a year later he was replaced by the young Gaudí, who devoted himself fully to the task until the time of his death in 1926. During his lifetime, Gaudí completed the crypt and the Nativity façade at the side, which have been declared a World Heritage Site .Fortunately The surviving drawings and models  have made it possible to continue with the building work, which continues to be funded by private donations.

Gaudi in Barcelona even thought it was a holly mission to finish the basilica  even when in a given moment some funds were finished he did not hesitate to pay  with his money to continue the works

Sagrada Família is intended to be a symbolic building, and this explains why it has three monumental façades: the eastern one dedicated to the birth of Christ, the western one dedicated to the Passion of Christ, and the Glory façade, which is the biggest of all, and is devoted to religious faith. The four towers on each façade represent the 12 Apostles

 A dome-shaped tower will eventually crown the apse, symbolising the Virgin Mary, and the four tall towers dedicated to the evangelists will encircle the central spire which will be built over the crossing and represent the Saviour. You can go up the towers using the lifht or on foot if you have energy enought, and is it really worth because you will enjoy  breathtaking views of Barcelona.

In  fact the work of Gaudi gives that name to a whole neigborhood and a metro station with same name. Also Gaudi's Avenue is a wonderfull avenue where to take a stroll or relaxing by the side of this basilica
